Drake and Burau Counseling Services, Inc. was founded in 1992 by Charles P. Drake and Elaine Burau. Drake and Burau provided intensive outpatient treatment for substance use disorders to adults and their families. The staff consisted of two licensed addiction counselors, a secretary/receptionist, and a consulting psychiatrist.
In 1994 the growing staff was planning for the treatment of adolescents and their families.
In 1995 intensive outpatient treatment services were being provided to both adult and adolescent persons and their families. A second consulting psychiatrist specializing in adolescent care was added to the staff.
The importance of providing treatment to the entire family as well as the importance of one's spirituality have always been recognized by Drake and Burau and in 1995 an additional family counselor and a full time chaplain were added to the staff.
In 1996 Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors were added to the staff and counseling for other clinically significant disorders of both adult and adolescent persons began to be provided.
In 2001 Drake and Burau Counseling Services, Inc. was renamed Drake Counseling Services, Inc.
In 2001 Drake Counseling Services began providing the North Dakota state sanctioned 12 and 20 hour DUI seminars.
In the spring of 2002, Drake Counseling Services opened it's Grand Forks, North Dakota facility and began providing chemical dependency treatment and other counseling services from that facility.
In June of 2002 Drake Counseling Services of Fargo began providing Partial Hospitalization Services to adolescents.
In July of 2004 Drake Counseling Services of Grand Forks began providing Adult Partial Hospitalization Services.
In May of 2005 Drake Counseling Services in Fargo began providing Adult Partial Hospitalization Services.
In May of 2007, Drake Counseling Services opened it's Detroit Lakes, Minnesota facility and began providing chemical dependency treatment and other counseling services from that facility.
In 2007 Drake Counseling Services purchased the Lutheran Social Services Spring Hill facility in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and obtained licensure to provide adolescent residential care.
In 2008 Drake Residential Treatment Center accepted its first resident.
In 2009 construction began on phase II of a three phase plan to increase, by the summer of 2011, the bed capacity of Drake Residential Treatment Center to 24 beds.
