Rutland General Store was started in 2007 as the brainchild of Ms. Vann, who was born in the Netherlands and immigrated with her parents to the United States in 1956. The family settled in Rutland, North Dakota, but in 1958, they moved to Oregon. Every year for vacation, the family always returned to Rutland. The community was welcoming, and the family felt most at home there.
After 40 years in Oregon, Ms. Vann decided to move back to Rutland and open a store. A cousin, Kathy Brakke, gave her the store building and Ms. Vann purchased the existing business on the site. A small idea grew into a large enterprise. What was supposed to be a small antiques shop turned into a 5,000-square-foot building, filled with antiques, fabrics, a deli, hardware, and a small convenience store.
